Is It Genuine Or Is It Counterfeit?

T elling the difference between genuine and counterfeit currency can be a challenge. Here are some steps you can follow to help insure you don't get burned:

  1. Compare the face of the bill in question with one you know to be genuine, checking closely the workmanship and clarity of the engraving.
    1. Check the Portrait.
      1. Genuine: Sharply delineated from background; lifelike eyes; regular, unbroken links in background.
      2. Counterfeit: Smudgy delineation with background; eyes dull and unlifelike; smudg;y, broken lines in background.
    2. Check the seal.
      1. Genuine: Saw-tooth points sharp and distinct.
      2. Counterfeit: Saw-tooth points broken, blunted, or uneven.
    3. Check the Scroll Work.
      1. Genuine: Lines are fine, sharp, and unbroken.
      2. Counterfeit: Lines are crude, smudgy, and broken.
  2. Compare the paper of the bill in question with that of a bill you know to be genuine.
    1. Genuine: High quality paper; embedded red and blue threads.
    2. Counterfeit: Cheaper paper; printed red and blue threads.
  3. If still in doubt, show the bill in question to an experienced money-handler, such as a bank teller, for example.
